It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? #IMWAYR

It’s been a cold week on the East Coast – with ice and snow abounding. I have been mostly chilling indoors and going to work, with the exception of a quick jaunt to Hmart and to play indoor Mini-Golf. The good news is, it’s a great time of year to catch up on reading!

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? #IMWAYR

I got a new job just before the holiday, so my pace with writing and blogging has slowed a bit as I’ve adjusted. So far I’m really enjoying it! And I still have a ton of great books I plan to read this year, so I’m excited to share them all with you! We were meant to get a giant winter storm this past weekend on the East Coast, but it only ended up being slushy rain, which I’m grateful for. What’s new with you?

My Top 10 Favorite Books of 2023

I read seventy-five books this year, but as with any year, some stood out above the rest. These are some of my favorite books I read in the past year…

2023 Goodreads Reading Challenge

I originally set a goal of reading 50 books in 2023, after only reading 50/55 last year. I interspersed some Manga and Graphic novels this year, which seemed to help my count. I also alternated between reading books and listening to audiobooks, to meet the demands of my attention span. And this year I’m happy to say I surpassed my goal and read 75 books!

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? #IMWAYR

I’ve been in Mexico City for the past week visiting my sister, so sorry the updates have been sporadic. I’ve still been getting a little bit of reading done between touring and eating. The food is amazing here! And of course, we got to see a lot of Dia de Los Muertos celebrations, which were really cool. I also watched “Coco” again for the first time in ages and the closing scene still makes me cry. Let me know in the comments if you’d be interested in seeing a travel post with pictures from my trip.

Feed Me! – Books with Creepy Plants

Ever since reading “Mexican Gothic” by Silvia Morena-Garcia, I’ve been seeing books about creepy plants everywhere. Even on television! The popular “Last of Us” show, for example, deals with a Zombie fungus that takes over human hosts. Perhaps because of their silent, unassuming nature, no one gives plants a second look. (It’s why I can’t keep one alive – I keep forgetting to water them!) But I love this trend of the silent, creeping killers surrounding us, waiting for their time to strike. I mean, how does one even fight back against a plant? A troop of sprouting mushrooms? Strangling vines? Flowers that bloom out of your mouth and eyes? Well, these books attempt to find out…

A Beginner’s Guide to Dark Academia

What is dark academia? Dark academia is an Internet aesthetic that centers around higher education, the arts, and literature. The aesthetic draws on 1930’s and 1940’s style clothing, gothic collegiate architecture, and activities such as writing, poetry, ancient art, classic literature, and ancient Greek. This aesthetic emerged in 2015 on the Tumblr social media app, perhaps to appeal to the aging Harry Potter generation of millennials and Gen-Z’s. As for the dark part of dark academia? Think murder, deception, magic, and secrets.

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? #IMWAYR

It’s been a rainy week here on the East Coast, with Hurricane Ophelia passing through. We had a handful of crisp, cool fall days and then the temperature dropped and the rain came. I like the rain when I can lie in bed with a good book, a cup of coffee, and one of my cats. But it’s less fun when you have to drive in crummy weather or run errands. I’ve been really into the “One Piece” live-action on Netflix, but now that I’ve finished it, I’m in a TV Rut. Any suggestions?

Top Ten Tuesday – Books on My Fall 2023 To-Read List

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. This week’s theme is “My Fall 2023 To-Read list”. Fall is one my favorite times to cozy up with a good book and a warm cat, with the falling leaves and rainy days. And there are some great books coming out in Fall 2023 that I can’t wait to get my hands on!

Photo Prompt Friday: A Taste of Honey

It’s been a while since I’ve done a Photo Prompt Friday, but I love curating images that inspire. Whenever I’m writing, I’m constantly using reference photos, and I know many other artists and writers do the same. So here’s to the return of Photo Prompt Friday! Happy creating!
